  • How often should I change my return air filter(s)?

The most important factor for efficient operation of your heating and air conditioning system is proper airflow. Dirty air filters will severely limit airflow, which can cause the compressor to run continuously - causing your operating costs to increase.

For fiberglass / pleated filters - You should replace or clean your return air filter(s) at least once a month, this includes pleated filters that claim to be three month filters. If you have special circumstances like pets or an ongoing construction project in the home, you may need to change you filter(s) more often.

For media filters - This depends on type of filter(s) you have. Some can be can be changed only once a year while others recommend every 6 months.

Why is do I hear a rattling or popping noise coming from my grill?

The supply grills are made of two separate parts. They can be easily opened or closed. If the room is not being used the grill can be closed. A slight adjustment of the grill can solve this problem.

Why does my blower come on for no reason?

The reason for this is the system is calling for fresh air, which can occur twice an hour for several minutes.

Why is there poor / or no airflow in a room?

Check to see if supply grill is completely open. Remember these grills can be closed if room is not being used.

Why do my bedrooms upstairs get cold at night during the colder season?

Heat rises, which comes from the 1st floor system. This will keep 2nd floor thermostat satisfied, causing 2nd floor furnace from coming on. Bedrooms with closed doors will be cold. Turning the fan to the "on" position on the 2nd floor system will circulate the hot air rising from downstairs into the upstairs bedrooms. Running the blower motor only cost about as much as running on ceiling fan.

Why is there poor airflow in my house with ice on the suction line at outdoor unit?

Check return air filters, depending on filter, they should be changed from one month to every six months (even sooner on new construction). Remember supply air comes from return air, so if one half return air is blocked, then your only getting one half supply air.

Why is there water dripping from my emergency drain line outside?

This is okay, but NOT! Emergency drain line is doing it's job, which is warning the homeowner that there is a problem with the main drain line. Main drain is clogged, which could or could not be caused by dirty filter or lack of maintenance. You may want to pour a cup of drain cleaner (such as Drano ®) in the drain line located in the attic to clear any build up in your lines. The drain line may take up to a day to clear up and stop leaking.

Why does the blower speed change when air-conditioner come on? (New houses)

Depending on furnace, the furnace blower motor is a variable speed motor, which will start up slow and over a few minutes pick up speed. This if for better efficiency. Some furnaces have multispeed motors where they start and stop at same speed.

Why is my thermostat blank, no screen, and nothing work?

This may be caused by no power to thermostat. Has anyone been in your attic? Power may have been turned off to the furnace. Power supplied to furnace in attic looks just like a light switch. Make sure it's on. Check for blinking lights in furnace blower panel.

Why doesn't my furnace work / no heat?

(Homeowner will need to be in attic or where furnace is located for this.) Is gas valve outside of furnace "on"? If so, check gas valve inside of furnace. (Service panel of furnace will need to be removed to check this). Once gas valve is turned on, system may need to be cycled several times to remove air from gas lines.
